Asbestos nanofibers
Are microscopic particles that can enter the lungs when inhaled. They have been linked to various lung diseases, such as pulmonary fibrosis, which is a scarring of the lung tissue that impairs its function. A recent study suggests that the size and shape of these nanofibers may be the key factors that determine their toxicity and the severity of the lung damage they cause. The researchers found that longer and thinner nanofibers were more likely to induce fibrosis than shorter and thicker ones, regardless of their chemical composition or dose. They hypothesized that this is because longer and thinner nanofibers can penetrate deeper into the lung tissue and trigger more inflammation and fibrotic responses. This finding has important implications for the prevention and treatment of asbestos-related lung diseases, as well as for the regulation and assessment of other nanomaterials that may pose similar health risks. Experimental Drug
A new study reveals that mesothelioma patients who received a combination of ADI-PEG20, an experimental drug, and standard chemotherapy had a median survival of 1.6 months longer than those who only received chemotherapy. Moreover, the proportion of patients who survived for three years or more was four times higher in the group that received ADI-PEG20. The researchers suggest that this drug may enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy for this aggressive cancer. Learn More.
Identifying Asbestos Containing Materials
Professional testing should always take precedence over self-test kits, but professionals have special equipment that ensures sample integrity while respirators protection limits exposure throughout.  Read Source Article
